Onyx stone looks bright and lush and can create an eye-catching look in high-end living spaces. This stone has been used to make pottery since ancient times. Note that onyx is undoubtedly beautiful, but it is also quite fragile. It is a soft calcareous stone tile mainly composed of calcium carbonate, and cleaning agate tiles with acidic cleaners can damage them. Therefore, cleaners and methods used for other tile types are not suitable for cleaning onyx tiles. A cleaner (pH neutral) specially designed for limestone tiles must be used.
How to clean onyx?
1. Wipe the surface with a soft damp cloth and mild soap. Common household cleaners are often acidic and can damage onyx. Milder soaps are ideal, such as dish soap or soaps labeled "green", which are usually pH neutral.
2. Use a soft bristle brush to remove scabbed spills. Harsh scrubbers can scratch the onyx, so it's best to use a cleaning brush. Wet the brush slightly and apply a mild soap to it before scrubbing.
3. Remove soap with a clean damp cloth. You can use a new cloth or rinse the soapy cloth thoroughly and use it to wipe the soap off the onyx surface. Wipe the surface at least twice, rinsing the cloth in between, to completely remove the soap.
4. Pat the surface dry with a clean towel. Prolonged exposure to moisture can cause stains and marks on the surface of onyx. Dab the water on the onyx with a dry towel instead of wiping it.
5. Wipe up spills with a clean towel as soon as possible. Moisture can damage onyx, so it's best to deal with messes right away rather than letting them sit. Drain any liquid on the onyx with a towel instead of wiping it, as this will spread the spill.
Our Suggestion
Sealants help protect your onyx surfaces from acid stains, scratches and etching. Use a food-safe stone sealant at least twice a year. Dab a dry cloth with a little sealant and rub it into the stone, working in small circular motions. Let the sealant dry for 5 minutes, then wipe with a new dry cloth for 10 minutes. If possible, let the onyx dry for 6 hours so the sealant can fully penetrate the stone.
