Onyx is a unique natural stone derived from drip stone deposits in limestone caves. Onyx is mainly made of calcite and is formed in caves in many parts of the world, mainly in the Middle East, North Africa and South America. When water drips from stalactites and stalagmites and then evaporates, it leaves behind deposits of calcium carbonate and other minerals that create the colored bands, swirls and spots of the stone. This results in the colored textures, swirls and patterns of the stone that are unique to onyx. Therefore, onyx is classified as a chemical sedimentary stone and may sometimes contain fossils and shells. Prehistoric animal bones have even been found preserved in onyx!

What does onyx look like?

Onyx is a crystal stone and is usually translucent - meaning it lets light through. Translucency varies from onyx board to onyx board, depending on color, thickness and surface finish. This is a unique feat, the stone will recrystallize in time and thus generally enhance translucency. It usually takes on a variety of shades of yellow due to iron deposits, but other common colors are green, white, orange, gold, pink and brown.

Should I use Onyx in my next project?

We believe that if you like this stone, a skilled builder will be able to make your onyx project a reality. Like most natural gemstones, it has the potential to be etched and stained; however, sealants can be used in addition to preventing wear over time. Feature walls, countertops, artwork and fireplaces are all particularly good examples of incorporating this stone into your home. Most onyx applications can be backlit to enhance the natural translucency of the stone.

Many homeowners use onyx for the tops of banquet tables, islands, side tables, or coffee tables, all of which can be backlit to enhance and accentuate the translucency of the stone. Onyx can also be used for fireplace surrounds, wall tiles and panels, and can be carved for lamp holders, bowls, vases and other decorative objects.

Agate is also one of the most expensive gemstones you can use at home, but its beauty, rarity and uniqueness attract many customers.
