Jura limestone is an amazing and widely known limestone from Germany that comes in two main variations: Jura Grey and Jura Beige. Both types of limestone are extracted in the same quarry, but in different sections or layers within the quarry. Some layers or sections may be beige, others may be grey, but both types share the same origin. They also share the same structural and technical characteristics. In short, we are talking about the same stone, but with differences in color and some elements visible on the surface.

Jura Limestone

Jura Grey, also known as Jura Silver or Jura Blue, is a grey limestone with an irregular background showing strong evidence of fossils, darker in colour and sparsely distributed throughout the surface. It may have some gray tones variations. Limestone is known for its hardness and low porosity, making it an ideal limestone for many applications.

Jura Beige, on the other hand, is mainly known for its strong fossil signs, darker, sparsely distributed throughout the stone surface, and a rather irregular beige background. Its main variation is mainly determined by the greater or lesser number of dark fossils, as well as the uniformity of the background. This limestone can have shades of light and shade, as well as vein-cut variations, although less common and in limited numbers.

Jura Beige Limestone

Limestone Comparison Color – These limestones are very different in color and tone. While Jura Beige has light beige and some strong red elements showing some contrast, Jura Grey Limestone has a cool grey background with less contrast between its elements.

Application – Although they share a common source, these two limestones are often used for completely different applications. This is mainly because of the color. While Jura Beige is commonly seen on exterior cladding projects, where beige is often used, Jura Grey is the limestone of choice for interior trim applications where more sober colors and less contrast are appreciated.

Market – This is probably one of the places where these limestones diverge the most. While Jura Beige limestone is a very popular limestone in the UK, Middle East, Asia etc markets, Jura Grey is a very popular limestone in the US or some European countries.

Jura Grey Limestone

Contrary to the cold grey color of the Jura Grey limestone, the Jura Beige limestone presents an earthy warm beige color, which is generally more popular and sells more. Good part of the market of Jura limestone is covered by the Jura Beige limestone.
