Three major factors affecting stone processing

The machine ability of stone generally refers to the ease of sawing, cutting, grinding and polishing. The sawing is the same, and the grinding and polishing are different or close, so the machine ability of most stone products usually refers to the saw ability and grinding. But what are the factors that affect stone processing in daily?

Marble polishing

The first is the hardness of the stone

Generally, the harder the stone is, the more difficult it is to process, the requirements for forming technology are very high, and the degree of wear of processing tools is relatively large. When the hardness of the stone increases, the wear resistance of the product will increase together, so the cutting resistance will continue to increase, so the requirements for processing tools are getting higher and higher.

Next is the composition of the stone

As we all know, the formation components of stone include minerals and chemicals. Different mineral and chemical components have different processing properties. For example, marble, the main mineral components are calcite and dolomite, whose Mohs hardness is 3 and 3.5-4 respectively, the hardness is lower than that of granite, and it is easy to process. The main minerals of granite are quartz, and its grindstone hardness is 6.5-7. Machine ability mainly depends on the content of quartz and feldspar, the higher the content, the more difficult it is to process. From the chemical composition point of view, the higher the SiO2 content, the more difficult it is to process.

Finally, the interior of the rock

In general, those grains have a structure that is easier to process than in homogeneous ones; fine grains are of higher quality than flakes. A denser stone appears much glossier than a loose stone; the mineral crystallinity is good, but it can also be oriented, and the alignment of the optical axis will greatly improve the gloss after polishing.
