Marble can be used outside?

Generally speaking of marble, the impression is that it is delicate and fragile, so it is mostly used indoors for daily use. Can marble be used outdoors? Of course! Is it suitable for outdoor use? That depends on how you choose to use it.

Our answer is: fit!

Outdoor Marble Project

We usually say that marble is not suitable for outdoor use. Strictly speaking, there are two situations:

1. Limestone, travertine and other stones with incomplete metamorphism.

Stone classification started relatively late in China, and it was not until 2005 that limestone was separately classified. Before and even now, many people do not know what limestone is and regard limestone as marble.

Limestone has not undergone secondary deterioration, and its texture is soft, loose and easy to absorb water. It is very different from marble in terms of crystallinity, water absorption, compressive strength and bending strength. Marble has high hardness and low water absorption, so it can be used outdoors.

Those "marble" that are said to be unsuitable for outdoor use should actually be called limestone. This kind of stone is loose in texture, easy to absorb water, and has poor weathering resistance. After the stone absorbs water, it is easy to expand and easy to be polluted.

2. Brightly colored marble is not suitable for outdoor use.

All natural phenomena have rules to follow. The new clothes you buy will only pass through the old, not the new. The color of the clothes will only become lighter and darker. The same is true for marble. Over time, weathering and pollution accumulate a little bit, and the color of the stone itself will become lighter and lighter until it disappears.

Especially in the outdoor environment, the stone is completely exposed to the sun, rain, wind, sand and dust. All of the above can aggravate the loss of luster and color of the marble. The brighter the marble decoration effect, the faster the loss. It doesn't look good.

The most important thing in using stone is decoration and durability. Losing any of these two items will lose the meaning of using stone.

But these two situations are not absolute. After some special treatment, any stone you want to use is suitable for outdoor use.

So which marbles are suitable for outdoor use?

1. High-quality marble

Generally speaking, the deterioration of high-quality marble is relatively complete, and there is no problem in using it outdoors, such as crystal white, white marble, etc., which are close to jade, the texture is dense, hard, and not easy to absorb water; the color itself is pure white, which will not occur. Discoloration phenomenon. For example, the famous Italian building - Florence Cathedral. The façade of the church was chosen in 1871 by the architect Emilio de Fabry and completed in 1887 in white marble from Carrara, green marble from Prato and pink marble from Maremma . Although it has been one or two hundred years, it is still exquisite.

This is due to the Mediterranean climate in which the church is located, with hot and dry summers and mild and rainy winters. Sufficient light and very little pollution. Such an outdoor environment is not easy to pollute the stone, and the damage to the stone is greatly reduced.

The second is the texture of the stone. Carrara white, which is widely used, has a hard texture and good acid and alkali resistance. The second most used green marble is serpentine, which has strong weathering resistance. Both types of stone can be used outdoors.

There are similar examples in China. For example, white marble, which has always been admired, is white and delicate, dense and hard, and has been slightly jadeized. It can be seen outside many ancient buildings.

2. Protected marble

At present, there are very mature technologies in China to support marble for outdoor decoration.

The treatment method is to first ablate the contaminants on the surface of the golden beige with antique water, and wash them away with water to remove the contamination layer on the stone surface. Then apply a layer of "VD stone polish protectant" on the marble surface that has become rough.

This is a surface-sealing film-forming stone protectant whose main component is acrylic resin. After brushing, a continuous protective layer of resin is formed on the rough stone surface. Waterproof, anti-fouling and anti-oxidation, it has a good protective effect on the external wall stone.

The treated exterior wall is more than ten years old, has been exposed to wind and sun, and has been polluted by various advertisements, but the overall effect is still good.
