Marble and granite are beautiful and highly sought-after surface materials. But everyone has their own attributes. It is important to weigh the pros and cons before deciding on one or the other for your surface treatment project. So, what is the difference?

Marble usually has veins, while granite has a more spot-like granular appearance, but it cannot be stated as a rule.

Basically, marble is softer and more porous than granite, with a few exceptions, such as marble from Danby, Vermont. Marble like Imperial Danby from Vermont is one of the very strong types. The crystal structure of granite makes it more resistant to abrasion, staining and discoloration, and is actually the strongest of all natural stones.

Granite is an igneous rock, which means that it once melted and formed as it cooled deep in the earth. The minerals contained in granite usually appear in the form of small spots throughout the stone. On the other hand, marble used to be limestone, which changes due to high temperature and pressure. This process changed its crystal structure and introduced other minerals, resulting in its unique veining.

Both marble and granite are hard, heavy, relatively heat-resistant and anti-scorch, and come in a variety of colors and patterns. Since both are created in nature, colors and patterns may vary greatly. In both cases, the display samples you see in the store may not accurately reflect your actual purchase.
